The 14th annual NewIS Summer Program is now available for registration. Every year, NewIS welcomes students from our own student body, children from the local community, and students from overseas, many of whom return year after year for a program based on active learning through experiential activities. This year we plan to bring back the events of previous years, which saw in-person exhibitions and performances of student work being provided for parents or guardians on the last day of each session.
Learning within the contexts of, for example, drama, music, art, digital media, domestic sciences, and other creative activities, provides students with opportunities to expand their imagination, interests and skills in many directions. There are also Japanese Program options which are available for ages 3 ~ 5 year olds and for 6 year olds and older.
Teachers both from NewIS and teachers who have previously taught in the NewIS Summer Program will facilitate this year’s program with a maximum ratio of 12 students per teacher. The 2023 NewIS Summer Program runs from Thursday, July 6th to Friday, August 4th. There are options to register for the first two week session only, for the second two week session only, or for all four weeks. The program hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with an added cost aftercare option to 4:30 p.m also available. School will be closed for the Japanese national holiday on Monday, July 17th with the following day, Tuesday, July 18th, a school holiday making for a four day weekend.
Summer Program Online Orientation
To help those already registered, and also those interested in registering, to better understand how the learning is structured during the Summer Program, there is an online orientation on Monday, June 7th at 10:00. This orientation will give a brief overview of the different program choices, an example of a Summer Program timetable, and general information, such as start and finish times and lunch requirements. Fees
The tuition fees are indicated on this table. An additional registration fee of 25,000 yen is required for new students only. It is waived for students currently or formerly enrolled at NewIS or in the Saturday or Summer programs.
Parents are invited to register their children on-line through the links on this page. Upon registration, parents receive a confirmation email indicating the amount to be paid with bank transfer information and a due date. Bank charges vary depending on the country of origin and all bank transfer charges (both abroad and in Japan) are the responsibility of the parents. After dismissal at 15:00, an aftercare program is available for an additional fee of 15,000 yen for two weeks or 25,000 yen for four weeks. This is a flat rate which does not vary in relation to attendance or absence. Aftercare is unstructured supervision time and does not have a specific learning based purpose. The language of supervision may be either Japanese or English, depending on the supervising adult.
Program in English
The English program has Early Years, Junior, Senior, and Secondary Classes split across the age range of 3 to 17 years old.
The Early Years class, for toilet trained children ages 3 to 5, shares a spacious classroom with the Japanese Early Years program and specialists visit periodically to enhance the program. The focus is on activity based learning facilitated primarily in English.
English program classes for students between the ages of 6 and 17 are divided by age along a rough guide of lower primary, upper primary and secondary students. The classes for these age ranges are called the Junior Classes, Senior Classes and Secondary Classes respectively. Activity based learning with a wide range of activities such as drama, music, art, sonic arts and digital animation, enables students to maintain interest and engagement throughout the day and provide the context through which they can broaden and develop their English language skills regardless of initial proficiency.
Program in Japanese
The Japanese program has Early Years and Senior Classes across the age range of 3 to 17 years old.
The Japanese Early Years class, for toilet trained children ages 3 to 5, shares a spacious classroom with the English program class. English speaking specialists visit the class periodically to enhance the program. The focus is on activity based learning facilitated primarily in Japanese.
In the Japanese program Senior classes, for students between the ages of 6 and 17, students spend the majority of their day engaging in a blend of language based and activity based learning. The program is designed to accommodate a wide range of proficiencies, so beginning to advanced speakers of Japanese are welcome. Each day students also visit a specialist class of their choice where the content is delivered in English.
Steam Program
The STEAM program is available to students of ages 13 to 17 years old. Delivered primarily in English, it is project based, enabling students to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics with a particular object in mind. Previous projects have centered around themes such as flight, bridges, racing cars, and maglev trains. Through this theme based approach, students investigate elements of scientific thinking and design, and apply this knowledge in practical situations.
The STEAM class runs across the four weeks of the Summer Program, with a different theme for each of the two week sessions. STEAM class activities are designed to investigate one element of scientific inquiry through a project approach including the culminating presentation on the last day of each session. The program is facilitated in English, although there is no language proficiency requirement.
Program Requirements
More details about program requirements will be sent upon registration; however, it may be helpful to parents to know the following in advance:
Students applying for the early years program must no longer require the use of diapers.
Lunches are not provided and need to be brought from home each day.
Healthy options are encouraged, so please ensure drinks are non-carbonated and food choices are healthy,
Items brought from home should be clearly labeled and named.
Indoor shoes are not required to join the program.
Comfortable casual clothing is recommended: The school uniform is not required.
Cancellation Policy
In the case of cancellation by the registrant after payment has been made, all but 25,000 yen of the prepaid fees will be refunded provided that the school is informed in writing on or before June 15th, 2023. For cancellation after that date and prior to July 1st, 50% of the prepaid fees will be refunded. There can be no refunds after July 1st. Please note also that the fees cannot be prorated for late starts or early departures.
Precautionary Health Measures
Students and staff are reminded that if ill for any reason, they should not attend the summer program until well again. In situations where a member of a student or staff’s household is ill, we ask that those concerned consider carefully whether they should attend that day or not. In the event of the Ikebukuro Health Center recommending that we close a class while they investigate close contacts, the tuition fees for the days that the program is closed will be reimbursed.
Regarding Covid-19, teachers, staff, and students will aim to avoid at least one of the following criteria:
1) continuous contact for 15 minutes or more.
2) being at a distance of one meter or less (close enough to touch by hand)
3) neither person wearing a face mask.
