New International School of Japan was founded in 2001, as the first international school in Japan specifically established to meet the needs of permanent, international marriage, and/or long-term residents of Japan, regardless of nationality, in the clear and research-based recognition that dual language and multiage education are good for children!

In addition, the school offers a smooth transition for children moving from a Japanese based educational system to an English one, or vice versa, and families temporarily in Japan  but with an interest in Japanese as well as English are also welcome.

The school began for children from age 3 to Grade 9 and extended to Grade 12 from August 28, 2014.   It is accredited through grade 12 by both the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and the Council of International Schools (CIS), and it is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS), the Progressive Education Network (PEN) and the  Tokyo Association of International Preschools (TAIP).

At New International School, the children maintain and develop their social and academic skills, creativity, and independence in a child-centered environment they can participate in with great enthusiasm.  Knowledge, skills and attitudes are developed through an inspired dual language implementation of Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence.

Our students learn bilingually through team-taught multiage classes, a resource-based thematic approach, and a combination of whole group, individual, center-based and project-based activities. There are two full time teachers for about twenty children in each exceptionally well-resourced classroom.

Multiage education, like Montessori education, is constructivist, meaning that the children construct their own knowledge and understanding based on experience.  It is, however, a Vygotskian style of constructivism which emphasizes learning and language acquisition as a social process.   The students learn from one another as well as from the teachers in a highly interactive style of education.   The children thrive in an environment where they can progress unimpeded by traditional grade level limitations.

From August of the calendar year in which they turn 6, all the students learn to play the violin by ear, physical education includes International Tae Kwon Do, and Mandarin Chinese is offered as an elective.

Interested persons are encouraged to visit by appointment or register for a group orientation and tour, offered at least twice monthly, once in English and once in Japanese.

学校法人岩田学園ニューインターナショナルスクールオブジャパン（ニューインターナショナルスクール）は、2001年に創立し、国籍を問わず、日本に長期在住または永住されている方や、国際結婚されている方のニーズに応えるべく特別に設立された国内最初のインターナショナルスクールです。常に研究を重ね、二言語教育・マルチエイジ教育が子どもにとって大変有益であることをはっきりと認識しております。

さらに、当校では、日本語を主体とした教育を行う学校と英語を主体とした教育を行う学校間を転校する子ども達にとって、その移行をスムーズにできるようサポートします。日本に短期滞在される方で日本語・英語の両言語に関心をお持ちの方も歓迎しております。

創立当初は、3歳児から第9学年までを受け入れておりましたが、2014年8月28日より、第12学年までが通う学校へと発展しました。そして、3歳児から第12学年までのプログラムが、ミドルステート学校・大学協会（MSA）及びインターナショナルスクール会議（CIS）より認可を受けております。また、当校は、日本インターナショナルスクール会議（The  Japan Council of International Schools）、The Progressive Education Network  （PEN）に加入し、The Tokyo Association of International Preschools の設立当初からの会員で、The Corporate Contribution Plan Association (CCPA)に加盟しております。

ニューインターナショナルスクールの子ども達は、子どもが中心となり熱心に取り組める環境のもとで、社会性や学力、創造力、主体性を伸ばしていきます。さらに、当校ではスコットランドの「卓越へのカリキュラム」を二言語で実施しており、子ども達は知識、技能、学習への姿勢を発達させていきます。

子ども達は英語と日本語で学び、授業はマルチエイジクラスの中で、チームティーチングの手法を使って進めております。また、テーマに基づいてカリキュラムを組んでおり、教材はそのカリキュラムに合わせて準備しております。そして、クラス全体での学習や個人で進める学習、さらにセンターやプロジェクトをベースにした学習を組み合わせております。1クラスには、約20人の児童に対して2人の担任を配置しております。

マルチエイジ教育は、モンテッソーリ教育のように構成主義の考えに基づいた教育であり、子ども達は体験に基づいて知識や理解を構築していきます。それは、構成主義の中でもヴィゴツキー（心理学者）が唱えた構成主義であり、学習及び言語習得が社会的プロセスであることを強調しています。つまり、子ども達は高度にインタラクティブな手法を用いた教育環境の下で、教師から学ぶと同時に子ども達同士から学びます。子ども達は、学年レベルという従来からの制約に妨げられることなく進歩できるような環境でこそ成長を遂げることができるのです。

当校の年度は8月下旬に開始し、その年に6歳以上になる子ども達は全員スズキメソード（耳から曲を覚える）でヴァイオリンを習い、テコンドーなどを取り入れた体育の授業に参加します。また、中国語のクラスは選択授業として開講しております。 　本校に興味をお持ちくださった方は、アポイントをお取りの上、見学にお越しください。施設のご案内を含む学校説明会へのご参加も歓迎しております。学校説明会は、毎月英語で１回以上、日本語で１回以上行っております。
